Backstory: Kiboko and Basi were born around the same time as Mufasa and Scar. Their lives were uneventful as far as hippos went, with the both of them fighting for dominance with the other male hippos in the pod.
A parallel could be drawn between the lion brothers and the hippo brothers; Basi was the more powerful of the two, yet he was kind, gentle, and wise, becoming friends with the young male crocodile Pua. But Kiboko was aggressive and violent, and always attacked other animals who got near the watering hole, including the crocodiles. When Basi became leader of the hippos, he banished his brother from the float after he became too violent and had almost killed his young nephew Beshte.
Kiboko lived on his own for a while, creating problems for King Mufasa and enjoying terrorizing the citizens of the Pridelands. When Scar took over, Kiboko left as soon as his watering hole dried up, he came back when he heard it had filled up again, simple as that.
Kiboko never gave a damn about who was King or not, it made no difference to him, but when Simba brought humans into the Pridelands it was the last straw. Kiboko pulled himself from his watering hole and crossed the river to ally himself with the recently deposed Scar.
