Puck
Known Aliases: Owen Burnett, Robin Goodfellow
Rank: Shadowkeeper
Alignment: The Rogues
Gender: Genderfluid (He/Him/His)
Age: Several thousand years
Personality:
Puck’s personality is quite difficult to pin down. At first glance, he appears lively, free-spirited, some might even say easy-going. He is the constant life of the party, always looking for a new way to entertain himself and those around him. However, as Puck is apt to teach you, there are two faces to every coin.
While he is indeed an excitable and free-willed creature, Puck is not to be trifled with. He is known to be quite dangerous and mean-spirited when angered. Being a child of Oberon, emotions are confusing and slow to come to Puck. Living among mortals has helped to curb some of his darker tendencies, but they still lie close to the surface.
Nevertheless, he remains a simple creature at heart. Watch out for his temper and be sure to keep a handful of praises at your side (along with your sense of humor) to appease him and all will be well.
Maybe.
Backstory:
Roughly a thousand years ago, in the midst of great unrest on the Island of Avalon, King Oberon commanded each of his Children to explore the human realm in order to learn humility and understanding of their ever-changing world. His servant, Puck, was one of the few excited for the task. Born to serve, he had spent his life at the side of his somber lord and master, with little chance to explore and experiment to his full potential. He quickly found the mortal world – and its inhabitants – to be all that he’d hoped for and more. Known as a trickster spirit, he gained fear and reverence with the human name “Robin Goodfellow,” a title he’d earned after several centuries of leading wayward travelers off into the night, causing mischief and even death for a few unlucky creatures.
However, it wasn’t until relatively recently that he became directly involved with a few individual mortal lives and their affairs. Upon discovering that the fairy queen Titania had taken a human form and involved herself with another mortal, he decided to follow suit and become an employee of her husband, purely to see what all the fuss was about. Thus came the birth of Puck’s favorite persona: Owen Burnett, a stiff and dry straight-player to rival Puck’s opposite personality. While in Titania’s employ, he met her daughter Fox and her boyfriend David Xanatos, a pair he greatly preferred to Titania and her then-husband. Owen was hired as Xanatos’ right-hand man, an envious position that would require his utmost loyalty and servitude, something Puck was all-too familiar with.
While in Xanatos’ service, Puck revealed himself to his new master as a member of the Third Race, offering him a choice between a wish from Puck or a lifetime of service from Owen. Choosing Owen, Puck then made his own choice to forever serve this new master until his last breath, an offer than became extended to Xanatos’ son Alexander and Fox once Oberon learned of this betrayal. His powers were limited to that of serving and training the young Alexander, and a permanent banishment from Avalon. After this, Puck’s allegiance to the humans became forever sealed, a fact he first resented but came to appreciate after the hurt of this rejection from his former master Oberon.
Unbeknownst to Puck, however, a previous encounter with the leader of the Manhattan Gargoyle Clan Goliath lead to the destruction of a magical artifact known as the Phoenix Gate, a device which would allow the user to transport through time. Goliath sent the artifact hurtling through time and space on its own after Puck’s attempt to steal it, thinking it was lost forever. However, magic has a way of changing the purpose of things from their original intent. Now, due to its lack of a bearer, the Phoenix Gate serves as a seemingly random teleporter that appears to those who need it, whether they know it or not. Two years after Puck’s banishment the Phoenix Gate appeared and transported him back several centuries to a world erupting with magical warfare. Never one for severe conflict, Puck now finds himself attempting to assist the humans in their battle for order – after all, doesn’t saving the world count as protecting his protégé?
“A human attempting magic is a lot like a baby with a firecracker – it’s cute, sure, but someone should really do something about it.”
