In sullen silence, Boso messily deracinated a creeping foxglove flower and inattentively tossed the coromandel in a basket as he brooded over yesterday. Yuki was running low on healing herbs, so Jasper told Boso to restock them all.
The dark burgundy fawn heard footsteps behind him and gave an exasperated sigh, assuming Jasper had some to scold him for "not taking pride in his work." He scowled. "What do you want now?" he snapped without turning around.

"Well that's a nice way to greet someone."
It wasn't Jasper, in fact it wasn't even one of the adults. It was a cadet, and another deer at that. Holly's voice laced with sarcasm as she walked up to Boso, tilting her head at the fellow fawn.
Brown eyes cast a glance at the basket, herbs hastily tossed in it, many with broken stems or torn leaves. She frowned slightly, before turning her attention back to Boso.
"You know, if Jasper sees you messed up the herbs, he'll probably just give you more chores."

Definitely not Jasper. Boso glanced over his shoulder. "Oh, it's just you," he said impassively. He was relieved it was not Jasper, but he had a hunch Holly was about to drop some knowledge. Ugh.
Boso hissed like a pot on the stove. "What's the point?" he whined melodramatically. "Jasper's been on my case for as long as I've been here! Besides, he didn't ask for a bouquet." |

"Maybe he wouldn't be on your case so much if you didn't have such a bad attitude."
Holly sat by the basket, absentmindedly shuffling the herbs around so that they looked at least somewhat presentable.
"You act like you hate everything and everyone, or at least that's how it looks. Even some of the other cadets have noticed it, especially after the stunt that happened yesterday."
Flicking an ear, she stood back on her hooves and stared at him squarely, a frown on her freckled face.
"Seriously, you gotta drop the attitude, or you'll be stuck with mundane chores for a lot longer than just a couple days."

Boso shrugged. "I'm just being real," he maintained. "I tell it like it is." He knew he was being hypocritical. Even if he had known who actually stole Aladdin's coin purse, he'd sooner bend his knee to Clopin Trouillefou than grass.
"'Drop the attitude?!' I'll drop the attitude when Jasper drops his," he snapped. "He's not my dad!"

"You're right, he's not. And he's not mine either, but you know what he is? Our superior, and an adult, who deserves to be treated with a little respect."
She glanced over her shoulder, checking to make sure said shapeshifter wasn't around, before letting out a sigh and sitting down, her tone a little less harsh.
"I know Jasper's... "dad-ing" can be annoying at times. I don't know about you, but I never had a father... so having someone try to act like one towards me now is a bit... weird."
She shook her head,
"But he's trying his best to help us cadets, they all are. Couldn't you at least try and give them a little respect for that?"

Boso's face grew dark. "My dad walked out on us," he said matter-of-factly. "I hate him. He's the biggest coward in Böhmerwald!" Boso knew his mother was not an easy doe to get along with; Rolla was a notorious drama queen. And Ronno never wanted fawns. But that hardly gave him an excuse to just up and leave. Boso felt his life would have been a lot better if Ronno stayed, despite Rolla telling him that they were better off without him.
"We're Freedom Fighters just like they are," he pointed out. "But it seems like every time there's a crime, they assume the cadets did it. And if one of us did do it, we all get punished! How is that fair, Holly?"
