Cogsworth
Known Aliases: clockee ding dong
Rank: Peacekeeper
Alignment: Freedom Fighters
Gender: Cis Male
Age: 45
Personality:
Cogsworth can come off as a stuffy buzzkill because he usually has an objection to any sort of rule-breaking or havoc-causing. His motives for his tight leash on others are to keep them (and himself) out of trouble. He can be a stickler for rules and has a small comfort zone. He’s also stressed out the majority of the time; prone to being nervous and jumpy. Though he is caring and willing give to advice or comfort whenever he feels it could be given. He seems to enjoy attention and being able to relay his vast amounts of knowledge to others. When he isn’t being fussy, he does have an amiable quality that keeps him from being completely unlikable. Formerly the head of household of Prince Adam’s castle, he believes he is entitled to some degree of attention and obedience; though, since he had trouble keeping order even back at home, he’s grown rather used to being disobeyed. This isn’t to say his temper doesn’t grow short during these all-too-frequent occasions. His reactions to not getting his way can range from frustration, to extreme worry, and occasionally to complete apathy.
Backstory:
Cogsworth was born into Prince Adam’s court. From a young age, he was disciplined to be up to the task of becoming the castle’s future head of household, like his father before him, and his father before him, and so on. Given he comes from such a prestigious lineage, he took to only being called by his family name in adulthood. First names are for chumps. When he was a child, he made friends with a younger servant by the name of Lumiere. Because Cogsworth didn’t have any real brothers or sisters, he took to adopting Lumiere as his younger brother – although to this day he won’t easily admit it.
During his teenage/young adulthood, it became clear to his family that he maybe wasn’t up to the task of managing the household; they saw him as a bumbler and maybe a little spineless. It was at this time that the then young man was drafted into the French army. He spent about two years away from the castle and, when questioned, is elusive about what exactly his experience was. Although, he does still have his uniform buried in his quarters somewhere.
Upon returning to the castle, he was immediately given the job of majordomo, to replace his late father, whose health was sharply declining. Cogsworth was allowed a few months to seek leadership advice from his father before he passed. From then on, he was very much on his own. During this time, he’d gotten to know the rest of the castle staff more intimately and grew close to the head maid, Mrs. Potts, eventually considering her at part of his (admittedly petty) little clique along with Lumiere.
It was then, as Cogsworth was still struggling to learn the ropes of his job, that an old beggar woman arrived at the castle doorstep. And, I’m sure we know what happened then; the master of the castle was punished for his cruelty toward the old woman and transformed into a beast. The castle staff were turned into objects. Cogsworth found he had to cope with life as a mantle clock in addition to stepping up to the task of head of household. Because he needed more stress in his life. No wonder he ended up so… tightly wound.
During the passing years, he became closer to Lumiere and Mrs. Potts as the need for emotional support grew. Though he and the rest of the castle had fallen into misery because of the enchantment, Cogsworth managed to, well, manage… the castle. He was often ignored or disrespected, although he’d grown to take that with a bit of salt. His wild friend Lumiere was often a headache, but at least he lightened the mood.
Just as it seemed hope was lost, a girl arrived to the castle. The household staff watched with bated breath as beauty and the beast grew to get along. Eventually, it was apparent the Beast had finally learned tostop being such a selfish butthead love. However, an attack on the castle was led by one spurned Gaston who had his heart set on killing the Beast so he may marry Belle – or something, Cogsworth himself is foggy on the details. After the attackers were warded off, Belle returned the Beast’s love and the spell was broken.
Upon returning to their human forms, those living in the castle could have their happily ever after.
